Obituary of Robert M. Haiken
Robert Myron Haiken, 93, of Little Egg Harbor NJ passed away on March 13, 2023 after a battle with
pancreatic cancer. His wife Marlene, of 67 years, and his daughter Dana were by his side to see him sail
away.
Bob was born in Newark NJ and lived in Springfield NJ where he and Marlene raised their daughter
Dana until they moved to Providence RI when his job transferred him there. Bob and Marlene spent 24
years loving Rhode Island and enjoying life there. They returned to NJ 3 years ago to be closer to their
daughter.
He attended the US Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point when drafted and served with pride and
valor as a graduate of the Class of ‘51. He was a sailor through and through – continuing his love of the
sea and the academy throughout his life, actively working for the Alumni Association. He then went on
to graduate with an engineering degree from Newark College of Engineering (now NJIT).
Bob was a true volunteer and giver – with his time and money. He gave tireless hours to the Springfield
First Aid Squad, earning a lifetime membership. His time with Save the Bay (Narragansett Bay) earned
him the volunteer of the year award. Bob gave his time and engineering background to work on
restoring The Providence, a historic sloop in Rhode Island, bringing his grandson Jason to help. He was
part of the Mystic Aquarium Animal Rescue and was always active in his temple -first at Temple Beth El
in Elizabeth NJ and then Temple Sinia in Rhode island. He believed in helping in any way he could.
He is survived by his loving wife Marlene, his daughter and her husband, Dana and Kevin Kline and their
son and his grandson, Jason Kline.
There will be a graveside service on Wednesday March 15 and the family will be sitting shiva until Friday
at his home in Little Egg Harbor.
Memorial donations can be made to U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Alumni Assoc and Foundation
