Obituary of Norma Weissberg
Norma Deutch Weissberg, 100, of Brick, NJ, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, May 8, 2019.Born in Brooklyn, NY, Norma grew up in Manhattan and Lakewood, NJ, and graduated Lakewood High School when she was 15 years old. She graduated from Monmouth College with an associate’s degree at age 18.
Norma was a lifelong educator in the New Jersey public school system, and in 1965 she became the first director of the “Head Start” program in Lakewood. In 1968, she became one of the state’s first learning disability specialists. In 1970, Norma earned a Master’s Degree from Trenton State University and in 1977, she retired from her career as an educator. Norma enjoyed her retirement for many years, traveling extensively worldwide, enjoying her house on the water in Brick, NJ, where she lived until her death, and enjoying her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Predeceased by her husband Phillip Deutch and Oscar Weissberg and her daughter, Barbara Shuman, Norma is survived by her children, Natalie Deutch Sawyer of Randolph, NJ and Stewart Deutch of Lakewood, NJ; Grandchildren, Dana of Woodbridge, NJ, Peter and his wife Kathleen of Middletown, DE, and Todd and his wife Keri of Randolph, NJ; Sister-in-laws Dorothy Mininsohn of Lakewood, NJ and Pearl Mininsohn of Howell, NJ; Great-Grandchildren, Matthew, Ally, Jillian, Jessica, Blake, Alexa, Devan, Ava, and Matthew.Funeral services will be held 10AM Sunday, May 12, at Beth Am Shalom 1235 NJ-70, Lakewood, NJ with interment to follow at Beth Olam Memorial Park.
