Obituary of Evelyn Ruth Siegel
Evelyn Ruth Siegel, aged 94, died peacefully on June 13, 2017 in Rockville, Maryland. Evelyn was born May 26, 1923 in New York City, the daughter of Reuben and Sophie Sibner.
Evelyn was a woman who loved to sit and chat with friends, even in her later years discussing politics or the latest novel she was reading. She was an avid mahjong player who loved the game as much as the time it gave her to spend with her friends. She made friends wherever she went and will be missed by many people who knew her well and those who just knew her in passing.
Evelyn was very proud of her Jewish heritage and an active member of the local temple’s B’nai B’rith chapter. She also made the world’s best matzo balls and chopped liver, two of Evelyn’s specialties that will sadly never be duplicated.
Evelyn married Jonathan Siegel on March 13, 1946 and they started their family life in Richmond Hill, Queens, then moved to Long Island in 1960 where they lived for 40 years, raising four children. Jonathan had a CPA practice for most of those years and Evelyn helped out with the business as his secretary. She later went on to work as an office manager for the Plainview School district for many years. When she finally retired in the late 1980’s, she and Jonathan traveled the world, from Israel to China to the UK and many other countries. In 2000, they moved to Lakewood, NJ, close to one of their children. In 2011, Jonathan passed away, and in 2015, Evelyn moved to Rockville, MD, close to another child.
Evelyn was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother and will be greatly missed. She is survived by her daughter Beverly and her husband Dennis, her son Allen and his wife Andrea, her son Jeffrey, and her son Michael and his wife Susan; ten grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Her brother, Marvin, passed away in 1991.
A funeral service will be held 10:30 AM Sunday, June 18, 2017, at Belkoff-Goldstein Funeral Chapel, 313 2nd St, Lakewood, NJ internment to follow at Beth Olam Memorial Park, Lakewood, NJ. Memorial donations can be sent in her name to your local B’nai B’rith chapter.
